Overviews

The Neurosurgery Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital at Guangzhou Medical College was founded in 1985, and also is a part of the Neuroscience Institution of Guangzhou Medical College.

It has been one of the key departments of the hospital with a strong commitment to patient care, education and research. In 1998, the department was authorized for master's degree course by National committee of degree. Today, our department has become an important basis for medical, teaching and researching of the college and an unit of advanced equipment, full specialty well technique and high academic level, and it also is the largest neurosurgical units in the Southern China.

There are 100 beds in our department, Approximately 1200 patients were treated here every year, and 810 operations and procedures are performed yearly. The department has been advancing in almost every field of neurosurgery and now there are twenty-three neurosurgeons, three professors, six associate professors and fourteen assistant professors. Now our focus attentions about the clinical and the research works in the field of neurosurgery has great progressed, mainly in cerebrovascular disease, kulls base surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, brain tumors, stereotactic neurosurgery and head injury.

There are four operating rooms dedicated to neurosurgical procedures and a dedicated six beds Neuro ICU. The department has five divisionsincluding , Cerebrovascular Surgery, Skull Base Surgery and Brain Tumors Surgery, Pediatric Neurosurgery, Head Injury and Spinal Surgery and Stereotactic Neurosurgery. Ourdepartment have many advanced instruments at international level, such as operation microscope(4 sets),neuro-navigation system,  ,ultrason-knife. Brain-endoscopes, laser-knife, γ-knifeTCD and intracranial pressure uncaring instrument, and Lakesell stereotactic system.

 

We carry out operations of microsurgery and stereotacticneurosurgery for brain tumor, cerebrovascular disease, neurological functional disorder and spinal lesion. Some operations has reach the national advance level and provincial leading level, such as resection of brain tumor, clipping of cerebral aneurysm, excision of arteriovenous malformation, children’s posterior skull fossa tumor, remove of pituitary adenoma via sphenoid approach, operating with endoventricle scope, treatment for Parkinson’ disease with gamma knife and intervention of cerebral aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation and arteriovenous fistula. In last 5 years, we have performed more than 2500 brain tumors with microsurgery and the surgical mortality was less than 1%. 200 intracranial aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations were resected in our department and successful rate reached the national advanced level. More than 200 children’s posterior skull fossa tumors were treated and the complete excision rate was up to 85%, surgical mortality was less than 0.5%. Our department was not only one of the first perform upper three operations in Guangdong Province, but also has the most number of such operations.
